Garitsa Corfu Your Complete Tourist Guide to the Suburb 2026

About Garitsa Corfu

Garitsa is the oldest suburb of Corfu and one of its most atmospheric. Not a typical “beach resort,” but a graceful waterfront neighbourhood. Garitsa blends residential elegance with a gentle, local rhythm. It’s the place where Corfiots come to jog along the bay, walk their dogs, enjoy a quiet coffee, or gather for a relaxed meal, always with beautiful sea views as the backdrop.

Garitsa Corfu stretches from the point you turn right as you exit the airport, all the way to its curved coastline. Situated between Corfu Town and Kanoni, its defining feature is the scenic 2 km promenade that runs from the Old Fortress to Anemomylos (the Windmill), lined with grove parkland, cafés, and some of the island’s finest restaurants.

As you stroll along the bay, you’ll enjoy stunning views of the Old Fortress, calm waters dotted with boats, and the mountains of mainland Greece across the sea. Loved by travellers seeking the charm of Corfu Town without its constant bustle, Garitsa offers a peaceful, family-friendly atmosphere and an authentic local feel. With easy access to the city centre, Kanoni, and the airport, Garitsa is an ideal base for those who want to explore Corfu’s cultural heart while staying in a serene, scenic setting.

The New part is full of shops and cafes, banks, medical services, an open market and the main intercity bus hub. Here, the locals go during the day for their daily business. Garitsa Beaches

Garitsa itself does not have a traditional sandy beach, but it offers several spots where visitors can relax by the sea or take a refreshing dip. The waterfront is mostly rocky with clear, shallow water, ideal for experienced swimmers or those who enjoy casual sea access rather than long beach days. The main Swiming Areas are:

Anemomilos (The Windmill)

The heart of Garitsa’s local swimming scene, Anemomilos isn’t a sandy beach but a long paved pier with several sets of steps leading directly into the sea. In most places the water is deep from the start, making it ideal for confident swimmers.
The area is mostly unorganised, there are no sunbeds or umbrellas, although a public shower and changing cubicles are available next to the windmill. At the entrance to the area, you’ll find Café Nautilus and a small kiosk where you can buy water, coffee, and snacks.
Behind the windmill, there is a small platform with sunbeds serviced by Anemomilos Café. This is the only organised section, where you can rent sunbeds or order drinks and refreshments directly from the café.

St. John’s Beach (informal name)

This small, narrow strip of beach known to locals as St. John’s, sits between Anemomilos and Royal Baths. It is made up of sand mixed with shingle. The water entry is rocky in most places, but there are cleared channels where larger stones have been removed to make access easier.
The beach is completely unorganised, yet very popular with locals. A few steps from the pavement along the main road lead directly down to it. The water is shallow at first and gradually gets deeper, making it suitable for a refreshing swim.
Because the beach is small, it can fill up quickly during the hottest months, so finding space to lay a towel isn’t always possible. However, you can usually leave your belongings somewhere and still enjoy a swim. A low wall runs along the length of the beach, and many people use it for sitting, drying off, or sunbathing

Royal Baths

Located at the far end of Garitsa Bay beside St. John’s Beach, Royal Baths is the area’s only fully organised beach club. The shoreline is a mix of sand and shingle, complemented by a wooden pier that allows swimmers to enter directly into deeper water, since the seabed can be rocky.
It’s a favourite among locals, especially families and older residents for its calm setting, clear shallow waters, and easy access. The beach offers sunbeds and umbrellas for rent, a high-quality café-restaurant, and facilities such as changing rooms, showers, and toilets. There are also naturally shaded spots under the trees for those who prefer to avoid the sun.
The water starts shallow and deepens gradually, making it more child-friendly than Anemomilos. And even if you don’t want to rent a lounger, there is still space to lay a towel along the beach or near the pier.

Other Beaches at the edge of Garitsa Corfu

If you’re looking to explore beyond the Beaches mentioned above, there are a couple of beautiful alternatives on either edge of Garitsa.

Kardaki Beach Near Kanoni Corfu

Kardaki Beach

Hidden within the grounds of the Mon Repos Estate, Kardaki Beach offers one of the most peaceful swimming spots near Garitsa. It was once used as the private bathing area of the Greek royal family during their stays at Mon Repos Palace.

Kardaki is completely unorganised, with no sunbeds, umbrellas, or facilities, so bring your own supplies if you plan to stay for a while

NAOK Beach

Located at the top end of Garitsa Bay, directly below the stylish Naok Azur bar-restaurant, this small beach attracts a younger, trendier crowd looking to combine swimming with socialising. The beach itself is a tiny pebble strip with an adjacent swimming platform.
Access is via the steps beside Naok Azur or by walking down the small downhill road about 100 metres before it. The beach offers dramatic views of the Old Fortress rising over the bay.
Facilities include a SEATRAC system for independent sea access for people with mobility difficulties, and sun loungers and umbrellas are available for rent often with a minimum spend required at Naok Azur. Guests can also enjoy direct service from the bar-restaurant above.

NAOK Beach Garitsa Bay Corfu

If you’re looking for long sandy beaches or something different from what Garitsa’s beaches offer, it’s easy to explore further afield. From San Rocco Square just a short walk away you can take the Blue Bus to nearby resorts such as Benitses, Dassia, and Ipsos. For destinations farther around the island, simply head to the Green Bus Station, which connects you to the rest of Corfu.

Tips for Garitsa Visitors

  1. Local Breakfast Spot: Skip the international hotel breakfast and head to a local fournos (bakery) for a fresh, warm tiropita (cheese pie) or koulouri (sesame ring) to enjoy on a bench by the sea.
  2. Wear comfortable shoes : If you intend to walk the promenade, go to Corfu town or visit the old fort or Mon Repo. Distances may seem short but with the wrong shoes it can become cumbersome.
  3. Grove Life: For the most authentic local experience in the Garitsa Groves, visit in the late afternoon when families gather. Grab a cold coffee from a Cafe, find a picnic table or bench, and simply watch daily life unfold.
  4. Refill your water bottle: Tap water in Corfu isn’t drinkable, so bottled water is usually needed. However, in the grove beside the Pétanque (boules) courts in Garitsa, you’ll find a public water fountain with four taps that dispense filtered drinking water for free. Locals regularly come here to fill bottles and containers for drinking, cooking, or simply refilling on the go.
