What Is Gialiskari Beach Like?
Gialiskari is a small-to-medium-sized sandy beach with a natural, open feel. The shoreline is backed by low vegetation, and the beach blends gently into the surrounding landscape. It feels quiet and uncrowded, even in summer, especially compared to nearby organised beaches.
The beach is flat and easy to walk along, with plenty of space for towels. Its proximity to the lagoon gives the area a slightly wilder character than other north-coast beaches.

The beach is made out of coarse-grained sand, and the part near the shoreline has a pebble mix. There are some solid sandstone plates in front of the shoreline, which create a shallow natural pool between the beach and the plates. Be careful if you enter the water by walking over the stone plates, as they can be very slippery. Either use water shoes or enter form the right of the beach.
Note: While the shallow, sandy shoreline is safe for children, the absence of toilets, shops, organised facilities, and reliable shade means it may not be the easiest option for families with young children. Agios Spiridon Beach, located nearby, is usually a more practical choice.
How Crowded Does Gialiskari Beach Get?
- Generally low crowd levels

- Often quieter than nearby Agios Spiridon Beach
- Ideal for visitors wanting space

Best Time to Visit Gialiskari Beach
Time of Day
- Early Morning (6-10am) ★★★★★ : Magical! Empty beach, calm water, perfect light, cool temperature for hiking. Arrive early, have the beach to yourself all morning.
- Midday (10am-3pm) ★★☆☆☆ : Hottest sun, no shade, brutal heat July-August. If coming midday, bring serious shade and lots of water. Water is warmest though.
- Afternoon (3-7pm) ★★★★☆ : Still warm, slightly cooler than midday, good swimming. Beautiful light for photos. Fewer people (most left by now).
By Season
- May – June: Good weather and Temperature. Very quiet, warm enough for swimming, wildflowers blooming, perfect hiking weather. This is the time to visit.
- July – August: Warm sea, still uncrowded, Very hot with no shade, intense sun, harder for hiking. Challenging conditions, bring LOTS of water.
- September – October: Still warm, fewer people than summer, perfect weather for hiking, water still warm. Second-best time to visit after May-June.
Must Bring your own Shade. Without shade, you cannot comfortably stay on this beach for more than 1-2 hours in summer. The sun exposure is relentless. Many visitors come for a quick swim and leave, rather than spending all day.
Weather Considerations
Meltemi Days (North Wind): Gialiskari faces directly north – VERY exposed to meltemi. On strong north wind days (25+ km/h), the beach gets choppy and unpleasant. Check wind forecast, if meltemi is strong, skip this beach and go to a western/southern beach instead.
After Rain/Storms: The dirt road becomes muddy and potentially impassable. Beach itself recovers quickly. Trail can be slippery in rocky sections.
⚠️ IMPORTANT: Safety & Preparation
There are few facilities at Gialiskari Beach. Bring water, snacks, sun protection, and your own shade. Stay hydrated, reapply sunscreen regularly, and if visiting alone, let someone know where you’re going.
